Bamboology is a UK-based organization that is engaged in the production of unique bamboo structures. They combine traditional craftsmanship with organic materials. In this way, they create incredible structures with a natural design. They reduce their impact on the world by using little to no heavy machinery for the natural materials. Bamboology stands for life, giving love and dancing lightly on the earth with bamboo in all colors.
Bamboo Import Europe supplied Bamboology with black Java bamboo sticks for their "Traveling Temple" project last year. They combined the dark Java with deep red fabrics. This year they collaborated with AKTII on 'The Beacon'. The artwork was commissioned by Climate Art for the artist residency "A vanished sea" who wanted an installation on the beach at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. For this project, Bamboology used our strong guadua poles that blend beautifully with the colors of the beach and fabrics.
The beacon is a large installation on the pebble beach of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. It is a unique architectural element. Innovative techniques are used in stretching the fabrics. This has allowed more to be achieved with less. It is a feat of great architectural potential.
A lot of attention was paid to details. The beacon symbolizes a lighthouse watching out for endangered ships at sea. The yellow fabric is inspired by a local flower, the yellow corn poppy that grows in Rye harbor. The beacon symbolizes hope and reunion. It highlights this by providing space for events for the first time since the lockdown.
The beacon was designed and built by Bamboology, with engineering by AKTII. Commissioned by Climate Art for the artist residency "Vanished at Sea". With support from: Sussex Wild Life Trust, Arts Council England, and Bridge Point Rye.
You can hire The Beacon in the UK, but Bamboology is also available for personal bamboo designs. You can contact them at info@jrwarchitecturaldesigns.co.uk or visit their website at www.bamboology.co.uk. On Instagram, you can find them here.
