Tensegrity art

with bamboo poles

All Along the Watchtower

The Antepavillion has artistic, experimental projects competing in the architectural competition every year. This year's theme was 'Bartizan' or: medieval watchtower. The group 'Project Bunny Rabbit' is on the roof of the Antepavillion this summer with their creative take on the concept.

The Antepavillion is in the Columbia Wharf in London. For six weeks, the Project Bunny Rabbit team worked on a tensegrity construction made of bamboo poles and steel wire. It is a controversial and striking design in which the construction manages to circumvent the laws of gravity. The concept of tensegrity is about correctly measuring points of gravity and playing with the push and pull of an object. In this way, the entire building is created by means of poles that seem to float in the middle of nowhere. It is precisely this floating that provides stability for the poles. The constant tension on the steel wires gives the whole its shape. It makes the various towers lightweight and real eye-catchers.

The choice of this eye-catching design provides space for events on the roof and is striking enough that it can be seen from afar. This art structure has been named "All Along the Watchtower". The watchtower is named after a song by Bob Dylan. It is a warning of the chaos to come, with artistic commentary on climate change and the ecological dangers it brings. The drama of the building reflects the urgency of these problems.

The fact that the construction calls attention to climate issues is, of course, very fitting for us as Bamboo Import Europe. The Co2 negative bamboo makes it extremely suitable for such expressions. With a sustainable product, we are committed to improving ecological problems such as deforestation.
