What products are made from bamboo? Customers often ask us about the different applications of bamboo, but the better question would be: What can't be made from bamboo? Or as the old Asian proverb says:
"A man is born in a bamboo cradle and is buried in a bamboo coffin, everything in between is possible with bamboo!"
It has to be said, almost anything can be made from bamboo, from medicine to biofuel and from edible bamboo shoots and clothing to building materials, it all exists.
The versatile grass has been used since time immemorial, but in the last 15 years many modern applications have been added. The demand for solid bamboo panels and beams, composites, veneers and especially flooring is growing all over the world because bamboo is an extremely durable, strong and beautiful material. Furthermore, bamboo grows much faster than ordinary trees. The trunks are already cut at the age of 4-5 years compared to 15-25 years for ordinary trees.
This short film was commissioned by INBAR for the World Expo in Shanghai shows the many uses for bamboo, including surfboards, bicycles, building materials, etc.
The challenge we face today is to further improve and innovate the use of bamboo. Because bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth and because it is a sustainable building material, it can easily replace all existing wood applications without having to cut down entire bamboo forests or plantations. Better still, bamboo continues to grow after harvesting without having to be replanted. Bamboo also sets approximately 35% converts more CO2 into oxygen than ordinary trees.
The bamboo products that we see on the market today are just the tip of the iceberg. We predict that more and more innovative bamboo applications will reach consumer markets at a rapid pace. Therefore, it is an exciting time to be alive if you are also convinced of how bamboo can contribute to a greener and cleaner environment. We cannot change our consumption-based economy, but we can improve the resources we use and the way we produce our products.
Below is a list of common applications for bamboo. However, please note that not all bamboo species are suitable for every application. Some species are edible (most are not), while other bamboo species are used as structural wood, for decorative applications or as pulp. Each bamboo species therefore has its own specific properties and applications.
